I was born in Johannesburg and grew up in Cape Town, moving with my family to Los Angeles while I was in high school.

I studied architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI_Arc), graduating in 2007, and spent the following years in practice. I worked on children's hospitals, net-zero office buildings, and the third phase of the California Science Center, built to house the space shuttle Endeavour. Later I founded moore+friesl with my husband, taking on consulting and interior work.

Since I was a child, I have had an interest in art, working in acrylic, soft pastel and watercolour. Architecture absorbed that for a long time. When I moved to Canada in the middle of the pandemic, I started painting again, and it has been the centre of my practice since.

The koi come from Kyoto. I spent a semester there during architecture school, much of it touring the gardens, and I have never forgotten the ponds. These paintings are a way of holding onto that time.

I paint in acrylic, mostly on gallery depth cradled panel. My training is in design rather than paint, and much of what I know about the medium I have taught myself, with a few classes along the way. The architecture is still there in how I compose a painting, in the way a shape sits inside a frame and how much quiet is left around it.

I live and work in Oakville, Ontario.
